Members started arriving and settling down to the peace and quiet of Foothold from Sunday 28. There were a lot of comings and goings over the 5 days which made for a mix of friendships and varied conversations.
There were clouds over the mountains first thing most mornings but these cleared as the sun rose and the heat increased but this did not stop the general maintenance around Foothold taking place with a couple of hikes being organised. The grass was mowed, Hikers Haven cleaned, some path clearing achieved, water pipeline checked, front door repaired, road run offs cleaned out etc etc. A big THANK YOU needs to go to all those who assisted with these ‘chores’.
A great start to the celebrations for 2015 was made with a good number hiking up to Millennium Koppie for sundowners. There was good humour, a variety of snacks and drinks and a general feeling of anticipation, not only for the celebrations to come but for the storm to arrive as the clouds gathered and got darker. Back at Hikers Haven, braai fires were lit just as the heavens opened – thank goodness for the shelter as the braais were moved under the awning and everybody scattered for cover. Most people were able to enjoy their evening meal outside and then it was time for the JHC’s DJ, Des Bell, to entertain us with an amazing assortment of music for all tastes. At one stage almost everybody was on the uneven bricked dance floor before heavy rains put paid to this. Lights went out for a short while although Des was not fazed as he was prepared for such an event. At this point the sleeping bags of many were calling but the rest danced the evening away inside Hikers Haven. Midnight arrived and the 12 or so people still up, hugged each other and soon afterwards Foothold was quiet.
Morning dawned with overcast skies but this did not deter a few from hiking up to the escarpment, the rest gathered around scottles for a ‘bring what you had breakfast’ consisting of eggs, bacon, sausages, tomatoes and mushrooms served with champagne and juice – a really wonderful camaraderie existed and a super ending to a great couple of days at Foothold.
Let’s see what 2015 brings forth – great events at Foothold with perhaps more members getting involved in keeping Hikers Haven in good shape. Thanks to all those who regularly attend the month end camps, which are free to members so come along, get involved but more importantly enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the area.
